Board Game Brunch: Digging in the Trash

Fine dining the masked bandit way. This week we enjoyed Trash Can Nachos and played Trash Pandas.

The Game…Trash Pandas

Trash Pandas, by Gamewright Games is a push your luck and set collection game. You did through the trash can to find cards that assist you will stashing away more cards of each set than your opponent. To take actions on your turn, you roll a die. You can roll as many times as you like to try and acquire multiple actions. If you push your luck too far and roll the same action twice, you bust and don’t get to take any of the actions!

Since end game is triggered when the trash can (draw stack) is empty, Trash Pandas takes about 20 minutes rather you have 2, 3, or 4 players. In our game today, Conesy and I had fun stealing each others cards, forcing additional roles and trying to stash cards as quickly as we could. In the end, Conesy emerged the victor with a full stomach and 23 points to my 20.

The Food…Trash Can Nachos

The food inspired by a recipe from Guy Fieri I found online. In empty and clean bean cans, I layered our favorite nacho ingredients: chips, shredded chicken, black beans, tomatoes, onions, and jalapenos. Topped everything off with homemade salsa, sour cream, and cilantro. While it didn’t dump out of the can in a nice column (but really, when would trash do that?), it was a fun twist on eating our nacho brunch.

Board Game Brunch: Back and Saving Our Oceans

After a short hiatus, Board Game Brunch is back. This week we’re exploring one of our GenCon2022 impulse buys. Conesy and I try to control the oil spill, rescue marine animals, and enjoy some ocean inspired treats.

The Game…The Spill

The Spill, By Smirk and Laughter has you cooperatively trying to contain an oil spill, remove oil from the ocean, and rescue marine animals.

Reminiscent of Pandemic by ZMan Games, The Spill, has each player performing the role of a different specialist with unique abilities to aide in the ultimate goal. Even with a limited amount of action points per turn, the game can lull you into a false sense of competency, until the oil spill starts spiraling out of control. This is aided by the randomness of the dice drop before each turn.

This game was an impulse buy at GenGon 2022 for us. We enjoy playing cooperative games as a couple and and this one caught our eye with the oil rig dice tower and colorful marine animals. Initially, I was not expecting much from it, but a fun, medium weight game to pull out occasionally. Well, I have now played it 5 times in just under 2 weeks. I’ve only won twice, but the losses have not kept me from wanting to try again. Next game I plan to crank up the win conditions to the hard level.

The Food…Ocean Inspired Treats

Brunch consisted of various snack like foods with inspiration from multiple websites. We had banana dolphins playing in a sea of blue gelatin. An orang octopus surrounded by krispy treat star fish covered in oil (chocolate0 and sand (crushed graham crackers). We also enjoyed some fish swimming near the beach (pudding with gummy fish). And of course, a cup of oil (coffee) to wash it all down!

Board Game Brunch: Floriferous and Sweet

April showers brought May flowers to us. Enjoy a flowery game of Floriferous and some sweet cupcakes decorated like flowers.

The Game…Floriferous

Floriferous by Pencil First Games has you walking through your garden, collecting flowers for your arrangements. The game says it is a relaxing game, and it does feel like a nice relaxing set collection game.

Even is another player takes a card you want, there are still at least 2 other good options to choose from. Our game was close, with scores of 25 (Consey) to 31 (Suzanne). I envision Floriferous being pulled out as a nice filler game on game days or when we are playing with less competitive gamers.

The Food…Cupcake Flowers

Brunch consisted of delicious coffee and cupcakes. Fun, sugary, giant cupcakes decorated like flowers. Nice and relaxing brunch.

Board Game Brunch: Sharing Donuts with Iron Man

What better way to spend Sunday morning than with sharing a Randy’s donut and coffee with Iron Man? No Randy’s Donuts here in Madison, but we enjoyed some delicious donuts from Greenbush Bakery. After fueling up, we went and had Iron Man and Hulk battle Ultron in Marvel Champions.

The Game…Marvel Champions

Marvel Champions, by Fantasy Flight Games, is a cooperative card game where each player is a Marvel superhero, working to defeat a villain. This is a great game where you are immersed in the role you choose and each player deck is built to maximize the hero’s strengths. I played as Hulk and had fun smashing the villain each round. Consey played as Iron Man and spent the early part of the game building his tech up.

Our game seemed to be going pretty well and we felt as if we were gaining ground, until Hulk died. Once that happened, it was up to Iron Man to finish off Ultron. Unfortunately, the suit hadn’t been fully built up before Hulk died, which gave him an uphill battle. He fought valiantly, but ultimately Ultron got away.

The Food…Donuts and Coffee

Brunch consisted of delicious coffee and donuts. The best donut place around here is Greenbush Bakery. We picked up some great donuts and enjoyed our Iron Man inspired breakfast.

Board Game Brunch: Exploring Alien Frontiers

My favorite board game theme is Space. Because of this we have a plethora of space themed games. One of these games that we enjoy is Alien Frontiers by Starling Games. We enjoyed playing it this week and paring it was a simple space themed breakfast.

The Game…Alien Frontiers

Alien Frontiers, by Starling Games, is a resource management game where you are working to develop an alien planet. Dice are used as ships and the randomness of your roles each turn as some unpredictability to the game.

Our 2-player game was a nice back and forth on the scoring track until Conesy pulled out ahead and placed his last colony, while I just couldn’t get my last couple out. There are was to mitigate poor dice rolls, but I just did not get the synergy going as well as he did. Even when you lose, it’s still a good game that we can’t help but enjoy

The Food…Breakfast Crescent Moons and Spaceship Fruit Kabobs

Brunch consisted off a loose interpretation of the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese breakfast sandwiches and fruit rockets made out of strawberries and cantaloupe with fruit dip vapor trails.
