Welcome to Kickstart Monday! This is our weekly series featuring 2 or more crowdfunding projects that have caught our eye. We scour over platforms like Kickstarter and Gamefound to find projects that interest us.
Fate of Witches: The Coven-Building Card Game
Our first project this week is Fate of Witches: The Coven-Building Card Game from Onebold Studio on Kickstarter.
Fate of Witches is a 1 to 4 player card game where each player will be building a coven of witches by drafting cards and using light engine building mechanics. To build the strongest coven you’ll need to gather witches, villagers, and items and find the best combos of their abilities to maximize your scoring.
The game features 60+ beautifully hand illustrated character cards that range from the creepy to the humorous. In the game over several rounds you’ll play through the Dawn, Day, and Night phases. Most of the game take place during the Day phase where you will draft new characters from the village to add to your coven and take various Coven actions that let you recruit drafted characters, use special cast abilities on your characters, and remove suspicion from witches in your coven.
In the Night phase you’ll resolve a new event each round that will change up gameplay in positive and negative ways. Some events like the arrival of the witch hunter will change up the game rules and may force you to change your strategy for the next round. You may need to turn to the dark forces to lead your coven to victory Sacrificing characters in your coven lets you put them into your graveyard and potentially score more points, but you must be careful as you may raise the suspicion of the witch hunters or even get your witches burned at the stake. After all the events have been performed all players will total their coven’s score and the victor will be crowned the new Grand High Witch.
Fate of Witches is available for $35 for the base game which includes a spot UV box, linen finish cards and high quality tokens. You can also pledge for two copies of the game for $69 if you are already looking to start your own coven. The campaign for Fate of Witches: The Coven-Building Card Game will end on October 12, 2024, so make sure to get your pledges in before then.
March of Ants: Evolved Edition
Next up this week we are looking at March of Ants: Evolved Edition from Weird City Games on Kickstarter.
March of the Ants: Evolved Edition is an upgraded and revised version of 2015’s March of the Ants featuring new artwork and graphics, updated and streamlined rules, new cards and hexes, and several other updates. March of the Ants is a 1 to 5 player 4x game that plays in just 60 to 90 minutes.
In the game you’ll control your own colony of ants as you look to expand across the meadow and grow the most successful colony. As you explore the meadow you will reveal new hex tiles that give you access to valuable resources like food, larvae and cards. You may then want to march your ants or larvae into the meadow or through tunnels to secure your area, and once in position you may forage for new cards that let you take various actions such as evolving your ants.
Evolution cards let you improve your ants by replacing their head, thorax and abdomen with evolved versions that feature cool new art and grant unique abilities. Any edge you can gain from evolving will be important as you may be battling with other ants for control of your territory. You may find though that it is more beneficial to specialize in peaceful traits and look to live symbiotically with the other ant colonies. You’ll score points for media hexes you control, for colony goals you’ve achieved and for endgame bonuses where you’ve surpassed the competition.
Let’s dig down and take a peek at the pledge levels a available for the campaign:
- Standard Edition – $49 – One standard copy of the base game with wooden and meeples and applicable stretch goals
- Deluxe Edition – $65 – One deluxe copy that includes deluxe food and player nests, full art box back and the Predators and Prey expansion.
- Immortal Ant – $135 – A deluxe copy of the game plus your last name will be used as inspiration for the scientific name of one of the ant evolution cards.
The campaign for March of the Ants: Evolved Edition ends on October 10, 2024, so I suggest you march on over to the Kickstarter page and make your pledge before then.
