Kickstart Monday: Aberration and Grave Robbers from Outer Space

Welcome to Kickstart Monday! This is our weekly series featuring 2 or more crowdfunding projects that have caught our eye. We scour over platforms like Kickstarter, Gamefound, and Indigogo to find projects that interest us.

There are certainly some exciting projects out in crowdfunding land. Let’s take a look at a couple of games that we think you should check out.

Aberration

Our first project this week is the Gamefound campaign for Aberration from Ghostfire Gaming.

Aberration is a horror themed cooperative tower defense and survival game for 1-4 brave souls. Set in the dark fantasy world of Grim Hollow, players are tasked with defending a village from an onslaught of aberrant monsters. They will take on the mantle of a hero with unique special abilities such as Galgrick, the resilient dwarf warrior or Alwin, the keen sighted elf. The player can then further customize their character by pairing it with one of four different classes: the Monster Hunter, the Martial Artist, the  Duelist and the Captain.

Using bag building and worker placement mechanics players will send their heroes out into the darkness to light fires to reveal what lurks in the shadows of the forest. They will encounter aberrant monstrosities of a wide variety and must use their class skills, spells and items to defeat them. Players will draw ability tokens from their player bag of different types: Intellect, Strength, Speed, and Command which are used to trigger abilities of the matching type.

Players must be cautious though because the Great Beast lurks in the forest as well and its corruption can spread across the board and even to the heroes themselves. Becoming corrupted does have its advantages as it requires players to draw aberration cards which power up the players abilities making them even stronger. If one player takes on too many aberrations though the game will end in a loss so there is a risk reward element at play.

The Deluxe edition of Aberration is definitely the focus of the campaign, as it includes all of the detailed aberrant monster miniatures. The Deluxe edition is available for $149 USD. A Standard edition will be available for $79 USD but includes standees for all of the monsters rather than miniatures. You can also pledge for the Spellcasters Expansion as an add-on to either the Standard or Deluxe edition which includes new game scenarios, heroes and monsters. If you feel ready to face off against the monsters that lurk in the shadows, make your pledge for Aberration before October 20, 2023, when the campaign comes to a close.

Grave Robbers from Outer Space

Our second game this week is Grave Robbers from Outer Space, a Kickstarter project from Other Steve.

Grave Robbers from Outer Space originally released in 2001, but this Resurrected Edition brings the card game back from the dead along with some content from Grave Robbers 2: Skippy’s Revenge and Grave Robbers 3: Suburban Slashers. In Grave Robbers, 2-6 players put themselves in the shoes of a b-movie director competing to create the best film they can.

Players will build a custom deck of 30 cards from 10 different “feature packs” with different themes such as Creatures of the Night, the Shambling Dead, College Slasher and Mad Science. Each feature pack includes, characters, creatures locations, props, special effects and plot twists which are used to put together a movie. Props and Characters are added to your own movie while you can use Creatures to attack other players. Each turn you play cards from your hand by paying their popcorn cost which comes from popcorn icons on other cards already in your movie. Each card can add to your movie score for the end game or grant special abilities to use during the game.

There are 160 cards included in the game all which feature familiar and hilarious tropes from all kinds of horror and sci-fi movies. There are zombies, killer toys, a cabin in the woods, Ouija boards, vampires and just about everything else you would expect to see in a classic b-movie. In addition, per the Kickstarter, they plan to release 10-12 new themed feature packs every year so there should be plenty of fresh content for the game for quite a while. Grave Robbers from Outer Space is available for $45 USD and there are also a number of bonus add-ons including t-shirts, an expansion, and beta cards. If you are feeling the calling to create your very own b-movie, consider pledging for Grave Robbers from Outer Space before the campaign ends on October 8, 2023.

Kickstart Monday: Kavango and Potions of Azerland

Welcome to Kickstart Monday! This is our weekly series featuring 2 or more crowdfunding projects that have caught our eye. We scour over platforms like Kickstarter, Gamefound, and Indigogo to find projects that interest us.

There are certainly some exciting projects out in crowdfunding land. Let’s take a look at a couple of games that we think you should check out.

Kavango

First up this week we have Kavango a Kickstarter from Mazaza Games.

Kavango is a conservation themed card drafting game for 1-5 players. In  Kavango players take on the role of a conservation expert building a nature reserve to be a safe home for endangered animals. Players will compete to complete research projects, win conservation awards and ultimately build the highest scoring nature reserve to win the game. Each round hands of cards will be passed around and players will simultaneously draft cards to add to their nature reserve. Players will need to draft “producer” cards such as plants and food sources to provide the basic resources needed to support animals. If an animal’s needs for food and protection can be met they can move valuable animal cards like Ostriches, Painted Dogs or Aardvarks that they have drafted from their temporary sanctuary to their reserve. Each animal card is worth points but the more valuable animals have more complex needs. Players will need to manage their ecosystem’s resources strategically  to be able to draft the best animals and there are 160 different species cards with hand drawn illustrations to choose from. Kavango is available for about $60 USD for the base Kickstarter version, but you can also go for the Deluxe Edition for about $85 USD that will include upgraded wooden tokens, improved landscape boards, deluxe card trays and box organizers and fabric component bags. The Kavango campaign will end on October 19, 2023 so be sure to visit Kickstarter before then if you are looking to make a pledge.

Potions of Azerland

Our second game this week is Potions of Azerland a Kickstarter from Warped Reality Games.

Potions of Azerland is a potion brewing game for 1-4 players set in the magical world of Azerland. In Potions of Azerland players step into the shoes of a potion maker, brewing and selling potions to the visitors of the town’s Summer Solstice Festival. Each round players can forage for raw ingredients, study their craft, brew potions and sell their creations to visitors for prestige and rewards. The most prestigious potion maker at the end of six rounds will be the winner. At the start of the round players select a priority from 1 to 5 for each of the 5 actions (Forage, Brew, Study, Market, Fulfill) that they could perform in the round. The player with the lowest priority number for an action will be able to act first gaining the benefits of their action based on the priority they chose. Alternatively a player may wish to forgo and action and gain gold instead which they can spend in the market. Brewing a potion requires the player to have foraged or purchased the right ingredients for the potion and to have selected the Brew action with enough priority to brew the number of potions they desire. Once they have potions in hand, players can also drink their own potions to gain power full effects. For example at the novice level, a speed potion grants the player 2 gold from the supply and permanently gives them access to the Black Market ability for the game which gives them a private selection of cards to buy from the market. As players improve their level of knowledge of a potion with the Study action, more powerful potion effects become available. Players will mostly be using potions to compete to fulfill the requests of visitor cards by providing the right combination of potions to meet the visitor’s needs and gaining prestige points based on the difficulty of the order. It is also worth noting that the game features beautiful illustrations from Andrew Bosely, the artist behind Everdell. The base game version of Potions of Azerland will be available for $49 USD, but if deluxe versions are your thing you can get upgraded silkscreened resource tokens, metal coins and deluxe dual layer player boards in the deluxe game for $79 USD. If you are ready to brew up a pledge for Potions of Azerland head over to Kickstarter before the campaign ends on September 28, 2023.

Kickstart Monday: Body of Evidence: The Murder Mystery Autopsy Game and Fromage

Welcome to Kickstart Monday! This is our weekly series featuring 2 or more crowdfunding projects that have caught our eye. We scour over platforms like Kickstarter, Gamefound, and Indigogo to find projects that interest us.

There are certainly some exciting projects out in crowdfunding land. Let’s take a look at a couple of games that we think you should check out.

Body of Evidence: The Murder Mystery Autopsy Game

First up this week is Body of Evidence: The Murder Mystery Autopsy Game, a Kickstarter from Mysterious Package Company.

Body of Evidence is a murder mystery game for 1-4 players with a playtime of 2-3 hours. In the game the players will find themselves posed with solving the murder of victim Christian LeClair. The investigation will take the players through a series of case files and they must use their deductive reasoning and sleuthing skills to build a clear picture of the case. Evidence from the crime scene and field work will help the players in their investigation with documents, clippings, and physical evidence guiding the players toward the truth. Ultimately though the players must head to the morgue to perform an autopsy on the body gathering the definitive evidence to prove their case. If the players have followed the clues correctly they will be able to solve the case and confront the culprit.

Body of Evidence features a single pledge level for $37 USD which represents a 10% discount from the retail price. There are also a number of add-ons for other games from Mysterious Package Company. If you are itching to dig in to this mystery find your way to the Kickstarter page and make a pledge before September 21, 2023.

Fromage

Our second game this week is Fromage, a Kickstarter campaign by Road to Infamy.

Fromage is a 1-4 player medium complexity  eurogame that is all about cheese. As a French cheese maker players will make a variety of artisan cheeses, age and sell them. The game features a unique four quadrant rotating game board that is triple layered which allows for  a huge variety of game setups. The game board rotating is also how your cheese ages! During the game players take actions using a simultaneous worker placement mechanic with each player placing workers in the quadrant of the board that is facing them. The campaign notes that this simultaneous worker placement condenses the playtime to around 40 minutes. To run a successful creamery, players must compete in each of the four quadrants of the game board. For example in the festival section players must place their cheeses on display in a connected group to show them off to festival goers while in the Villes section players score points for having the most influence in six different regions of France. Players can also build structures for unique abilities, harvest fruit for specialty cheeses and fulfill orders for extra points.

The campaign has two pledge levels, the standard edition for $35 USD and a limited edition for $49 USD that includes upgrades, wooden tokens and a neoprene Lazy Susan mat for the rotating game board. Make sure to visit the Fromage campaign page before October 10, 2023 to make your pledge.
