Board Game Brunch: The Pandemic Experience

Board Game Brunch returns this week after a brief hiatus. We have been having some pandemic “fun” of moving and then quarantining/isolating. We realized the most appropriate game to play today was Pandemic (with the On the Brink Expansion) and our back-up breakfast.

The Game…Pandemic with On the Brink

Pandemic and the On the Brink Expansion are published by Z-Man games. In this cooperative game your are trying to control the spread of viruses through out the world. We played as the Field Operator and Quarantine Specialist. This ended up being a great pairing as the Field operative has an ability to assist with finding cures. The Quarantine Specialist did an awesome job controlling the spread and outbreaks. We were one Epidemic away from losing the game, but managed to pull out a win with finding cures for the main viruses.

The Food…Jimmy Dean Breakfast Sandwiches

As part of our pandemic preparations, we had a box of Jimmy Dean Breakfast Sandwiches in the freezer. These were reserved for our last resort breakfast when we were very low on food and too sick to order groceries or cook. That day came today. Paired with a cup of coffee, the sandwiches provided us a good start to the morning so we could game.

Board Game Brunch: Playing Pirates

This week’s Board Game Brunch had Consey and I pulled out a game we haven’t played for a while, Maracaibo. We pared it with some Caribbean pirate grub and drink.

The Game…Maracaibo

Maracaibo, published by Capstone Games is a strategy game set in the 17th Century. You sail through the Caribbean delivering goods and preforming other actions.

Our game started out rocky as it had been a while since our last play. It took us a solid round to remember the basic strategy and how to maximize our actions. In the end, i managed my first win in this game, with my strategy of focusing on my career card. Consey worked hard to push the influence track and completed many battles. While it looked like he had locked the victory early on, it just didn’t pan out with end game scoring.

The Food…Pirate Guacamole and Bumbo

Flipping through YouTube videos one day, we discovered Tasting History and the recipe for Pirate Guacamole and Bumbo.

This guacamole is sweeter than what I usually make, but pared well with the Bumbo. Both were very sweet. The sweet guacamole paired nicely with the salty chips. The sweet, warm rum drink would be delicious to sip around a fire pit.

Board Game Brunch: On Location in the Caribbean

Last week Consey and I escaped the cold of Wisconsin for a much needed vacation to the Caribbean. The warm weather, the sun, the water. So what better game to play on the beach other than Reef? We enjoyed this game with some delicious snacks and tropical cocktails. Our regular Board Game Brunch will return next Sunday. Read on to see what we played in paradise and a few pictures from our trip.

Board Game Brunch: Memories of Warhammer Quest

Warhammer Quest and Belgian Waffles
Warhammer Quest and Belgian Waffles

Consey has fond memories of late nights of playing Warhammer Quest with friends and then everyone heading to a 24-hour dinner and enjoying a big stack of waffles with fruit. With the pandemic we may not be going out with friends to eat as much, but we can still have some fun at home.

Board Game Brunch: Battling Monsters of the Cthulhu Mythos

This week we dove into a world of fantasy and explored the Cthulhu mythos. It was our second play through of a the Cthulhu deck building game. Our last was almost a year ago, so it was time to break it out and enjoy battling the monsters with some green spaghetti and meatballs.
