Kickstart Monday: Kabuto Sumo: Sakura Slam and Dungeon Twist

Welcome to Kickstart Monday! This is our weekly series featuring 2 or more crowdfunding projects that have caught our eye. We scour over platforms like Kickstarter, Gamefound, and Indigogo to find projects that interest us.

There are certainly some exciting projects out in crowdfunding land. Let’s take a look at a couple of games that we think you should check out.

Kabuto Sumo: Sakura Slam

First this week we have Kabuto Sumo: Sakura Slam from BoardgameTables.com on Kickstarter.

Kabuto Sumo: Sakura Slam is a stand alone sequel to 2021’s Kabuto Sumo. In Sakura Slam 2 to 4 players will control a sumo wrestling bug known as a Kabuto Mushi. They will face off with their uniquely shaped wooden wrestler tokens in a raised wrestling ring board filled with different sized wooden discs. The goal of the game is to eliminate your opponents by sliding new discs into the arena and trying to push the completion off the edge of the board.

Sakura Slam uses the same mechanics as the original Kabuto Sumo but now features a square game board with fixed corner posts that you can use strategically when siding your pieces onto the board. Sakura Slam also features 8 new wrestlers like the Assassin Bug the Antlion and the Honey Bee each of which have their own unique power to use during the game. The new board and wrestlers are all compatible with the wrestlers from the original game and its expansions.

The Kickstarter is offering a bunch of different reward tiers starting with the base game tier for $39 USD. You can snag a copy of the game along with the new Swarm expansion at the next level for $54 USD. Further up the line for $89 you can get the game with the expansion, a Kabuto Mushi plushie and two deluxe wooden wrestling rings. And lastly the all-in pledge will include all of this and a copy of the original Kabuto sumo and the previous expansions and will run you $149 USD. If you are ready to get in the ring with Kabuto Sumo: Sakura Slam, push the competition out of the way and get to the kickstarted page to make your pledge before February 1, 2024.

Dungeon Twist

Next up this week is Dungeon Twist, a Kickstarter from Magari.fun.

Dungeon Twist is a competitive strategic tile-laying dungeon crawl game for 2 to 5 players. Players will guide one of 5 roguish heroes into an ever-changing dungeon to grab loot and treasure, steal from their opponents and with luck escape with their life and loot intact. Each turn players can add tiles to the dungeon constructing it tunnel by tunnel and room by room. Some rooms grant loot that can increase your wealth or power up your character when equipped.

While you can place up to three tiles in a turn you can also rotate tiles to open up new passageways or block in opponents or swap tiles in the dungeon for ones in your hand. Trap doors, portals and other special rooms will provide ways for you to move around the map in different ways.  You can strategically alter the dungeon to your favor and to mess with your opponents.  But what do you do if your opponents are having all the luck and finding all the valuable loot? That’s easy you rob them of course! You are a rogue after all. When robbing another character you roll dice against each other  and earn successes  based on the stats on your character card.

If you roll the most successes you can steal a token from the other player and choose to swap places with them to give yourself a positioning advantage. A thoughtful player will be looking to collect sets of three of the same dungeon tile as this will allow them to play larger and more powerful room tiles. Once enough room tiles have been played a treasure room can be added to the dungeon and players will scramble to obtain this ultimate prize. Once someone manages to escape with the treasure the remaining players will only have a short time to escape before the dungeon collapses on them. The survivor with the most wealth after escaping will be the winner.

The Core Edition of Dungeon Twist is available for ~$44 USD and also includes a print and play version that will be made available as soon as the campaign ends. The campaign for Dungeon Twist ends on February 17, 2024, so be sure to get your pledge in before then to get your copy.

Kickstart Monday: Carry Your Bags to Rome and More

Welcome to Kickstart Monday!!!! This is our weekly series featuring 2 or more crowdfunding projects in the tabletop gaming industry. I scour over platforms like KickstarterGamefound, and Indigogo to find projects that interest me. People would ask me what I think is worth backing. Since I was providing these recommendations all ready, what a better way to do it than post a weekly blog about projects I am interested in.

Stay informed when new Kickstart Monday projects come out by following us on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter and following the #KickstartMonday hashtag.

This week’s projects feature bags for carrying board games, gaming mats, and a territory control board game. Let’s dive into this week’s Kickstart Monday projects.

Bags and Playmats for Board Games

Boardgametables.com is best known for their Jasper Gaming table, but they also produce a number of accessories for the tabletop board gamer. This project will feature new options to their line of bags for transporting board games to game night, conventions, or wherever you need to take them. These bags will feature new colors and are designed to nicely hold 12×12 inch board game boxes. You know, that classic board game box size made famous by games like Ticket to Ride and multiple Fantasy Flight Games titles!

In addition, if you play at say the kitchen table, game store, or other surface and would just like something nicer to pick up game components on then this project has something for you. Neoprene mats come in three sizes and five different colors. With stitched edging, they will hold up. I know we end up having to put up a folding table for our extra table at game nights so having a mat like this is really attractive for us.

If you need something to carry your games to game night or a nice mat to go on your table for the game night then this project has something for you.

Total War: Rome The Board Game

Total War: Rome The Board Game from PSC Games and designed by Simon Hall is based on the highly popular video game of the same name. For up to four players, this game is played over a number of rounds. Like so many games, each round is a collection of phases. You will collect resources, convert those resources into more units and upgrades such as generals and weaponry, and then spread your legions over the lands to try to control as much territory as possible.

I have always enjoyed tactical war games, but at some point there just isn’t a reason to continue playing once someone gains the strong upper hand in resources, units, and board control (Games like Risk). Total War: Rome gets around this by making it a race to 25 VPs. You’ll score points for economic might, expansion, victory in battle, and other things. Race condition endings aren’t for everyone, but in this type of game, I think it’s ideal.

If you like tabletop strategy wargames or love this video game then this game is likely for you.

Kickstart Monday: Game Storage that Shines Under the Night Sky

Welcome to #KickstartMonday!!! We’re going to take a look at one of the biggest accessories that you can invest in for your game room, storage. Top that off, we’ll look at some amazing looking dice. Let’s get into this week’s #KickstartMonday

Jasper Modular Shelves

Jasper Modular Shelves from BoardGameTables.com features a modular, customizable game shelving and storage solution intended to be able to grow as your collection grows. These shelves are modular and can be customized to add the types of storage you need. Massive game box, there’s a shelving unit for it. Several games that are more standard sized, well there are shelves for that too! Make room to store your copy of Gloomhaven, Dungeons and Dragons books, and dozens of other board games.

If you are like most of us, then you are in need of a better way to store your games. These shelves will look great and can be coordinated with your game table color to match exactly if you have their Jasper gaming table too!

Northern Lights Dice

Courtesy of Their Project Page

Northern Lights Dice from Cerberus Supplies features a beautiful set of polyhedral dice for your role playing or board gaming fun! These dice are hand made dice that try to capture the natural look of the borealis in the northern sky. There are plenty of add-ons, such as a wooden dice box that looks like a treasure chest that you can explore as well.

Playing that Dungeons and Dragons game in the cold north of Icewind Dale? Playing a cool sci fi game and want dice that look like they are from another galaxy?

Getting the Best Out Of Your Jasper Gaming Table

The Jasper Gaming Table from BoardGameTables.com

It was a little over a year ago when my wife and I decided we were going to purchase our first tabletop gaming table. With a market full of options, there were a number of things to consider. Ultimately, we purchased the Jasper Gaming Table from BoardGameTables.com. With over a year of use I feel it’s a good time to give it a review

What You Need to Select that Perfect Board Game Table

Our Jasper Gaming Table from BoardGameTables.com

Picking that perfect board game table is really hard to do. About a year ago my wife and I found ourselves doing just that. We had committed to buying our first dedicated table for gaming. We debated a number of decision points and went back and forth for quite some time until we finally decided upon our final choice.

I hope to help provide some thoughts on what you want to consider to pick up that perfect game table.
