Kickstart Monday: Nanolith and Fox Experiment

Welcome to Kickstart Monday!!!! This is our weekly series featuring 2 or more crowdfunding projects in the tabletop gaming industry. I scour over platforms like Kickstarter, Gamefound, and Indigogo to find projects that interest me. People would ask me what I think is worth backing since I was providing these recommendations already. So why not share my thoughts with a weekly blog about projects that interest me?

In this week’s Kickstart Monday it wouldn’t do to not mention Elizabeth Hargrave’s latest game, The Fox Experiment. If you don’t know who Elizabeth Hargrave is, she is the designer behind the hit game Wingspan. In addition, we are going to take a look at the Cyberpunk game Nanolith. Cyberpunk is often a genre that doesn’t see too many releases in the board game world and this one has a lot of cool factors to it.

The Fox Experiment

The Fox Experiment from publisher Pandasaurus Games and designer Elizabeth Hargrave is a game about breeding domesticated foxes to have desirable traits. The game itself is based on a real experiment that attempted to determine how dogs were domesticated. While the original experiment may not have been the most humane to the animals, Pandasaurus ensures us that they do not support the kind of animal treatment that went into the historical experiments.

In the game itself, you will select the parents that have traits you want to pass on to the next generation. Then you will roll trait dice to create fox pups. Your goal is to create pups that match the studies that you have selected. This will all be done over a series of phases. After five rounds of gameplay final scores will be tallied and the player with the highest points wins. Overall this game is a combination of roll and write mechanics along with more traditional board game mechanisms to create a unique game experience.

If this game sounds interesting or you love games about breeding animals then you should definitely check out this project.

Nanolith

Nanolith, the Cyberpunk RPG Board Game, from publisher Woodpecker Games is a combination of board game and RPG game experience. Promising an immersive experience, players can experience the world of Neo-Eden. At the start of the game, this fantasy world is on the brink of collapse. Through the campaign element of the game, you will explore how the world got this way and overcome various challenges, enemies, and boss encounters.

The game itself promises players roughly 50-60 hours of playtime to complete a campaign. During each game, there will always be four player-controlled characters. These characters will be allowed to gain new equipment and level up between save points to allow those characters to scale with the growing challenges. Game sessions aren’t necessarily missions, but rather the game uses the idea of save points. The game is designed from a narrative design of going from the beginning to the end of the game, but the designers do not expect players to be able to complete that in one session, so when players reach a save point, they can pack up the game, note where they are and then set up the game the next time where the save point left off.

If you like the idea of RPG narrative board games with immersive game experiences then you should definitely check out this project.

Kickstart Monday: Dawn of Ulos and Legacy of Yu

This week I am diving into more board game content as to new projects are just hitting the scene. These two projects are from two of my favorite publishers so let’s dive into the projects and see what has me so excited!

Dawn of Ulos – A Roll Player Tale

Dawn of Ulos – A Roll Player Tale from ThunderWorks Games is the next game in the line of games set in the Roll Player universe. This game for 1-5 players will introduce new mechanics to this family of games.

While it will retain the similar art and look of previous games in the Roll Player Universe, this game will leverage tile laying and an economic engine that you will need to balance to be successful. Featuring 10 factions in the game (5 in each game), you will take part as the creator of civilization with table stakes in factions in areas you control. This in turn will gain you points towards winning the game.

If you love the idea of being the influencing creator of a world while competing against other powers for the influence of the world in a game then this project may well be for you!

Legacy of Yu

Legacy of Yu from Garphill Games takes a dive into the truly solitaire playing experience. That’s right, this game is for just a single-player campaign game. The campaign features self-balancing elements so that you should have a good experience even if you are struggling to get those wins in the game. The campaign game runs for 7 full plays of the game, at which point it’s easily reset so that you can try to do better the next time. As you progress, new elements will come into the game presenting new and exciting things to explore.

During the game, you will play Yu the Great during the Xia Dynasty in China. You will need to build canals and defend your village. During the game, you will need to balance worker placement, deck management, and resource management together to string actions together to have increasingly more efficient turns.

If you needed a great solo play game to add to your collection or think the theme of this game sounds intriguing make sure you check this project out.

Kickstart Monday: Sleeping Gods and Spinning Dice

Welcome to Kickstart Monday!!!! This is our weekly series featuring 2 or more crowdfunding projects in the tabletop gaming industry. Since I was providing these recommendations all ready, what better way to do it than post a weekly blog about projects I am interested in.

This week on Kickstart Monday I head over to Gamefound to look at an expansion to one of the games I hear talked about all of the time. Then we take a look at a surprisingly fun dice game.

Sleeping Gods: Distant Skies

Sleeping Gods: Distant Skies from Red Raven Games is a much-anticipated stand-alone sequel to Sleeping Gods. This expansion is going to provide more Sleeping Gods content. More characters, locations, narrative arcs, and more to discover. Featuring a new massive open world you will need to use your airplane to fly and discover some of the new locations.

Sleeping Gods: Distant Skies is a narrative, quest-based campaign game for 1-4 players. Playtime will likely vary somewhat on a per quest basis, but most sessions can be completed in 1-2 hours. Like many campaign games expect this one will keep you engaged for likely hundreds of gaming hours.

If you love deep narrative immersive games with a heavy story element and light role-playing then you should consider backing this project!

Tin Spin

Base Game and Components

Tin Spin from Surprisingly Fun Games is exactly that, surprisingly fun! We have had the opportunity to actually play this game for 2-6 players. This game features dexterity, strategy, and even some risk/reward gambling of gold cubes (points). The small form factor (a small metal tin) makes this game extremely easy to transport and its simple rules make it ideal for gamers and non-gamers.

On your turn you will either roll the dice you control or you will take a whirl at spinning your dice. Both have their risks and depending on the dice you control at the time you might opt for one option over the other. Of course, once you are done resolving your turn you will roll the SWAP die which will determine if the dice are passed and in which direction around the table.

We laughed and had a great time when we had the opportunity to play this game. It’s a great game to give as a gift so pick up a pair of copies when you back this project!
