Kickstart Monday: Abstract Strategy Meets Cthulhu

Welcome to Kickstart Monday!!! It’s 2022 and I am excited for all that this new year will bring. On Kickstart Monday I scour crowdfunding platforms for two or more projects that I feel are worth looking at. This includes platforms like Kickstarter, Gamefound, and Indigogo. Everything that is recommended on Kickstart Monday is oriented around tabletop gaming in some fashion.

This week I take a look at a really cool abstract game and plush creature that surely will rise from the depths. Let’s dive into it!

Canosa

Canosa from One Day West Games is an abstract game for two players that should take you around 20 minutes to play. In the game, you play as a siren who is trying to capture shipwrecked sailors. The box art is beautiful and actually is part of the gameplay experience.

Once the game is set up you will perform one of four actions on your turn. First, you may move your siren token. Next, you can move a ring from your siren to a sailor. This must be a sailor that is adjacent to your siren. Once you have a sailor under your control you then unlock the move a sailor action. Of course, the number of rings you have is limited so during the game you may need to remove a ring from a sailor and move it back to your siren.

To win the game you need to be the first to successfully move 4 sailors off the board or to trap your opponent. Moving sailors off the board is the most common way to win and involves moving a sailor to your starting spot. When this happens, remove the sailor from the board. Do this before your opponent and you win!

If you like quick, abstract strategy games then you should check out this one from One Day West Games.

Cthulhu’s D20 Plush

Cthulhu’s D20 Plush from NekoRaveWolf is a cute stuffed Cthulhu plushy with a removable D20. While not a traditional gaming-related item, this plushy would be great to help decorate a tabletop gaming space. Of course, if you just want more cute plushy critters then you can’t go wrong with this one either.

There are a number of unlocks and add ons that you look at adding to your pledge, from cute pins to funding goals that will unlock upgrades to the plushy.

If your gaming space needs a little decoration then you should check out this plushy project.

Kickstart Monday: Going Beyond the Void with Mythical Winds

Welcome to Kickstart Monday!!!! This is our weekly, or well mostly weekly, blog series where we feature two or more crowdfunding projects running on platforms such as Kickstarter, Gamefound, Indigogo, and others. These crowdfunding projects always are orientated around tabletop gaming. Often games, but also accessories, game room furniture, and other projects that catch our eye. Let’s take a look at this week’s featured projects!

Fractal: Beyond the Void

Fractal: Beyond the Void from Bored Game Ink is a 4x sci fi strategy game leveraging a legacy campaign setting. While this game claims to give you that full 4x experience faster, it’s play time is estimated at 30 minutes per player. It plays 1-4 players, so assume anything form 30-120 minutes plus set up and tear down for your game play.

Like most of these games, you will play as the plucky emerging empire in the solar system only to find other nations also rising at roughly the same time. To pull this off, there are three boxes to this game. To start with is the core game box. If you just want to play the game, not worry about legacy, and a pile of miniatures then this is the place to go.

Of course, you can take that up a notch and pick up the campaign box. This introduces a layered, storied legacy campaign that you can play out. Of course, plenty of new factions in this add on, more miniatures, and more game to explore. Taking the 4X game to the legacy gaming environment is unique, and different for this genre.

Of course, if you want a more rich 2-3 player game you can pick up the Automata expansion as an add-on. This will add all of the components you will need to enrich games at lower player counts by automating up to two players.

Of course, if you love delving into rich sci fi universes, legacy games, and tons of miniatures then you should check out Fractal: Beyond the Void.

Mythwind

Mythwind from OOMM Games is a co0perative game for 1-4 players that should play in 30 minutes to an hour typically. This will make Mythwind a great filler game for your game nights, or an even better game for families.

When you play Mythwind, each round in the game is the equivalent of one day in the games unique world. You will work collaboratively to build and grow your town. Take on the role of an asymetric character who has a specific skill set that you can utilize to increase the success of your town.

Mythwind uses what they call is a “Persistent World”. Effectively what that means, and it’s pretty exciting, is that your previous plays impact the set up, components, and game play of future games. This might be adding cards to decks, secret envelopes, and other tweeks to the game over the course of the play.

Since you are exploring and unlocking content through the course of game play you may find yourself playing several games during game night. If this excites you, then you should check out Mythwind!

Kickstart Monday: The Thunder is Heard in the West Kingdom

Welcome to #KickstartMonday!!! Our weekly series that features two crowdfunded gaming projects. We try to find two projects every week on various platforms like Kickstarter and Gamefound that catch our interest. These could be dice, miniatures, board games, gaming accessories, furniture, or even role playing gaming products. This week we’ll dive into a board game and an expansion.

Architects of the West Kingdom: Works of Wonder

Architects of the West Kingdom: Works of Wonder from designer Shem Phillips and published by Garphill Games is the second expansion to the hit game Architects of the West Kingdom. In the core game of Architects of the West Kingdom, which we reviewed on episode 76 of the WiscoDice Tabletop Gaming Podcast, you find a worker placement game where you start with an abundance of workers. As you place workers on locations, the more you have at a location the better the reward. However, if you have to pull back a worker you are not allowed to take any further action. There are mechanisms on the board to round up your workers more efficiently, or even capture your opponents workers. All the while, you are building the cathedral and other buildings that ultimately will score you points.

In the Works of Wonder expansion, players will find themselves back at it building the city for the king. However, new workers from far and wide have been drawn to help build five amazing wonderous monuments. There will be a new track to manage that tracks your influence. Players with more influence will certainly earn favors from the princess overseeing the construction of these monuments. However, the less noble profiteer will certainly award those who are looking to make a fast dollar on the kings expense.

If you love Architects of the West Kingdom this expansion looks to add onto the game with plenty of new mechanics. Owners of the base game should definitely look into adding this to their collection.

Thunder Rolls

Courtesy of their Project Page

In Thunder Rolls from Zeroic Games you will take on the role of a race car team trying to win it all. This game is different then many race car games that have been on the market. Leveraging a dice worker placement mechanism, this game definitely reduces the luck factor that so many games like this feature. This game can play between 1-8 players, so be ready for lots of car racing fun with your friends.

The game consists of two phases. In the first phase you will roll your dice, form them into sets, and then place them on action spaces (in player order). Action spaces grant you additional abilities and maneuvers that will impact your position on the race track. During this phase you will also be able to obtain Thunder Cards which are key to the next phase.

In the Thunder Phase you will use the Thunder Cards you have collected to program what your car will do during this phase. Thunder Cards have a green number which is associated with movement of your car. In player order you will reveal these cards from left to right until all cards are revealed and resolved. If you can outdistance the rest of the field by the end of the game you will be the winner.

If you love stock car racing, looking for a race car game, or are interested in playing something that leverages dice as a workers then this game is definitely one you should check out. Thunder Rolls looks to be a brilliant, fun game that will see gaming tables delight in fast speeds, hot action, and possibly a few collisions.

These dice are hand made dice that try to capture the natural look of the borealis in the northern sky. There are plenty of add-ons, such as a wooden dice box that looks like a treasure chest that you can explore as well.

Kickstart Monday: Don’t Miss the Wild Assent

We have had our celebrations for July 4th here in the US, but that hasn’t slowed us down on taking a look at the latest crowdfunded gaming projects. It’s that time for another Kickstart Monday so let’s take a look at these two games that are sure to please.

Wild Assent – Lavon Rising

Courtesy of their Project Page

Wild Assent – Lavon Rising from Lazy Squire Games is the most recent big game project to come to Gamefound. This is a reprint of the original game with all of the original exclusives that went with the original campaign. There will be added expansions as well that you can add to this game.

In the game, you will play a cooperative RPG style board game where you will play the game over multiple sessions discovering a deep narrative. Unlock the stories with beautifully modeled figures and lovely game board. You will play as a seeker who will have special and unique abilities that make each one different. You will have opportunities to recruit workers, discover locations, and find creatures. Your goal will be to locate and capture these creatures and return them for gold and glory.

If you love cooperative games that will give you plenty to discover over multiple sessions as your character grows in power then you should check out this project on Gamefound.

Potion Panic

Courtesy of their Project Page

Potion Panic from Rocket House Games will have you crafting magical concoctions and having a blast! You will have potion cards that you will play face down in front of you. At points during the game you will want to take the brew action, to set match your potions against an available recipe card.

Other actions include the smash action where you can trigger the ability of one of your face down potions and then it is discarded. You can also, as an action, place a potion card face down in front of you.

This game will provide a nice, lighter game for the table that will not only be family friendly, but also fun. Not to mention, you can back this project for just $3 US to have your own print and play copy. Something that not many of these projects offer.
