Kickstart Monday: Nassau & Kathmandu and Everstone

Welcome to Kickstart Monday! This is our weekly series featuring 2 or more crowdfunding projects that have caught our eye. We scour over platforms like Kickstarter, Gamefound, and Indigogo to find projects that interest us.

There are certainly some exciting projects out in crowdfunding land. Let’s take a look at a couple of games that we think you should check out.

Nassau and Kathmandu

Our first project this week is a Kickstarter from well known designer Stefan Feld and publisher Queen Games and actually features two games, Nassau and Kathmandu.

Nassau and Kathmandu are the latest entries in Stephan Feld’s collaboration with Queen Games called the City Collection. In Nassau players will find themselves captaining a pirate ship hiring a pirate crew in Nassau and traveling and fighting through the Caribbean. To prepare for your adventures you’ll need to gather resources in the alleys of Nassau like weapons, ammunition provisions, pets and of course coins and rum. Once you are well provisioned you’ll take to the sea and sail about the Caribbean setting up outposts, fighting your opponents, plundering trading posts and expanding your territory and influence. At the end of four rounds one player will have assembled the best crew and gained the most influence to be crowned the pirate king!

In Kathmandu you will embark on an adventure to the capital of Nepal. Using dice and actions cards you will travel through the wilderness in various landscapes on your trusty Yak. During your journey you will visit Temples and trade for useful goods at cities along the way. Gathering the right equipment will also help you overcome obstacles during your travels. You will also have an opportunity to paint pictures of the beautiful wildlife. After six rounds at game end you’ll score for animal paintings you’ve made, temples you’ve visited, trade good and bonus points for reaching Kathmandu.

For this Kickstarter there are many pledge options available that include other games in the City Collection but we will focus on just those for these two new games. Both Nassau and Kathmandu are available individually  as a “Classic” edition for $79. A deluxe version of either game with upgraded printed acrylic components can be had for $129. If you are looking to get both games you can pledge for both classic editions for $149 or get both deluxe editions for $255. The campaign for Nassau and Kathmandu ends on February 29, 2024, so be sure to check out the campaign page before that.

Everstone: Discovering Ignis

Our next game this week is Everstone: Discovering Ignis on Kickstarter from designer Sam McDavitt.

Everstone is a 1 to 4 player action selection engine building game  where players drive a caravan in the lands around the city of Ignis, looking to gain resources, barter for and repair relics while racing to gain the most reputation.

Each turn you will perform one of the four main actions on your player board: Explore, Harvest, Barter and Repair. With the Explore action your caravan will take you to different action spaces on the board with a special action based on the villager card at that location.  When you Harvest you’ll roll the Harvest dice to gain resources needed to repair the important Relic cards.

There are a number of ways to mitigate and tweak your dice rolls to get the resources you need.  As you gain resources you also advance on the influence track for that resource gaining potential bonuses. With the Barter action you will move your caravan to the city of Ignis and have the opportunity to buy Relic cards. Relics are multi-use; you’ll need to decide if you will sell the relic for immediate bonuses or keep the relic which is then added to your player board. Each Relic you keep is added to one of the main actions making it more powerful.

This is a key way that you build your efficiency engine in the game. In order to sell or keep a relic though you will first need to perform the Repair action spending resources to fix the relic and access its power. Repairing relics is another important way to gain reputation points. The first player to reach 10 reputation points will trigger the end of the game and the player with the most reputation is the winner!

Everstone will be available for $59 and will include the core game as well as all unlocked stretch goals. The campaign runs through March 14, 2024, so drive your caravan over to the Everstone: Discovering Ignis Kickstarter page before then to make your pledge.

Arydia: The Paths We Dare Tread

Arydia: The Paths We Dare Tread from Far Off Games is designed by the same design team that put together Xia: Legends of the Drift System. In Arydia, you will play a series of linked games with between 1-4 players to explore and discover the fantasy land of Arydia. This game is a classic campaign game where your characters will advance and grow over the course of game play. Arm yourselves, gather your friends, and explore the land.

Included with this project is over 60 pre-painted fantasy figures that you will have the opportunity to encounter over the course of the campaign. The game features different paths for the players that encompass the classic fantasy characters – warriors, healers, rogues, and rangers. With so much content to uncover and explore this will most certainly find a way back to your game table if you should choose to support it!

Discover new lands in this game of fantasy exploration. Unlock new powers as you gain mastery over your path. With events to overcome, monsters to thwart, and stories to be told this game has real potential.

Pirates

Pirates from Queen Games offers a light, fun pirate themed game for 3-5 players. This game is, at it’s core, a revised version of Buccaneer from Stefan Dorra. Play time promises to be quick, making this ideal for an evening game night or filler game for a game day.

On you turn you will take one of four actions, assemble boarders, capture, mutiny, and capture a pirate. From these actions play will proceed until all twenty cards are discovered. At that point, the game ends immediately.

The components and art of the game look very attractive, but most of the components are relegated to punch board card components, cards, and a few wooden tokens. At $35 US to support this project though, there is plenty of game here and certainly hours of fun for your gaming group.

If you like pirates and lighter games that play quickly, then make sure you check out Pirates from Queen Games.
