Welcome to Kickstart Monday! This is our weekly series featuring 2 or more crowdfunding projects that have caught our eye. We scour over platforms like Kickstarter, Gamefound, and Indigogo to find projects that interest us.
There are certainly some exciting projects out in crowdfunding land. Let’s take a look at a couple of games that we think you should check out.
Phantom Ink from Resonym is a game we discovered a few years ago while doing a Gen Con preview list. We were intrigued at how this party-style game engaged both the giver of clues for each team and the remaining players of the team could ask the clue giver questions. When we picked up our copy and get it to the table, we were delighted by how good the gameplay is. Whether you are the player giving clues (the spirit player) or are in the remaining players (known as mediums) there is plenty of challenge to this game for all groups.
Where this expansion to Phantom Ink is concerned is the new twists that it will add to gameplay. The addition of arcana cards that can now be played provide new depth to the game. Arcana cards add unique powers for that round of play. When you combine this with a new pad for writing the clues on that allows for disappearing ink, it can be harder for the other team to use your clues to solve the puzzle.
If you are like us and love word games that are party games then you should check out this expansion and pick up the base game while you are at it.
DC20 designed by the Dungeon Coach with much of the content creator community having feedback on this new streamlined D20 RPG system has been seeing a lot of discussion. This is another fantasy RPG system, and there seems to be quite a high number. However, besides being inspired and driven by content creators, this system features several changes that make the system exciting to use.
Two key features that catch our attention are how they handle rolling high on checks and the action point system. Neither of these is new to the world of RPGs, but both are refreshing in a system that uses the D20 dice roll as a key mechanism. Rolling high on checks means you can have different margins of success. In addition, having 4 action points that you can spend during your turn as a player gives you more options. Do you need to push for that extra attack this turn, or do you need to hold onto an action point so that you can react to something your foes do?
If you love collecting new RPGs or are ready to check out a new system with a D20 dice then you should check this project out!

There are certainly some exciting projects out in crowdfunding land. Let’s take a look at a couple of games that we think you should check out.
Our first project this week is a new offering in the Gooey Cube line of adventures for Dungeons and Dragons fifth edition. Their new Kickstarter is for The Tomb of Gyzaengaxx, an adventure and campaign setting made in collaboration with Luke Gygax the son of Gary Gygax.
The Kickstarter has two major offerings, The Tomb of Gyzaengaxx “Mega-Adventure” and the Environs of Gyzaengaxx campaign setting. The Tomb of Gyzaengaxx is an adventure for players levels 6 to 8. The setting is described as “lampoony, mysterious, and grimdark”. In the land around the tomb, players will discover the village of Etholmm and perhaps hear the terrifying rumors surrounding the tomb. They may also stumble across the wicked village of Blum full of nefarious characters. The tomb itself, which was once the keep of the wizard Garold Gyzaengaxx before his disappearance, is full of monsters, puzzles, traps, darkness and mysteries for the players to uncover.
The adventure also serves as an homage to Gary Gygax, the creator of D&D and is filled with references and Easter eggs related to the beginnings of D&D and the history of TTRPGs. And true to form for Gooey Cube, the adventure includes detailed maps, handouts, artwork, NPC portraits, magic item cards and special Gooey Rewards cards.
The campaign setting the Environs of Gyzaengaxx expands on the adventure offering new locations, dungeons, villages, NPCs and plenty of side tales and quests for players to explore. Included in the box set is an immersive lore book, 2 new character classes, 2 new races, and many new spells, magic items and monsters. On top of this Kickstarter backers will get the unlocked stretch goals which at the time of writing include new classes, races, spells, magic items, as well as some files for 3d printable miniatures and digital tokens for virtual tabletops.
The Tomb of Gyzaengaxx adventure stand-alone is available for $65 and the Campaign Setting on its own is $140. A bundle with the Adventure and campaign setting can be had for $200. Digital only copies are also available for each of these. Also worth noting is that all pledges are for the collectors editions that will only be available through Kickstarter. The campaign for The Tomb of Gyzaengaxx will run through March 25, 2024, so you will need to get your pledge in before then .
Ostia is a 1 to 4 player strategy game set in the Mediterranean in 103 A.D. centered around the port of Ostia, an important port in the ancient Roman Empire. In Ostia, players will command a fleet of ships sending them to explore other countries, establish trade routes and bring food and commodities to the people to gain the favor of citizens and nobles.
Players take actions using a mancala mechanism moving their ships through six distinct sections on their player board. Each section provides resources and/or actions. The player gathers resources for each ship in a section they choose then moves those ships placing a ship in each section clockwise and taking the action of the section where their last ship is placed. Players can build and upgrade ships, move their fleet to new locations, trade, build bases in different ports and supply food to the citizens and nobles.
In the new Pirates expansion for Ostia, exploration and trade have become more dangerous as pirates now patrol the seas around trading ports. Players must now equip themselves with weapons and legionnaires to repel the pirate threat. These new dangers aren’t without their rewards though, defeating pirates will gain you valuable treasure. Players can also expand the city of Ostia by building new buildings and must manage their reputation in the market of Trajan.
The campaign for the Ostia Pirates expansion offers a variety of pledge levels for backers including the opportunity to get a copy of the base game. If the Pirates expansion is all you need it is available for $39 with the standard pledge but you can upgrade to the deluxe pledge for $64 and get deluxe metal components. The Basegame+Pirates pledge will get you just that, a copy of Ostia and the Pirates Expansion for $87. Further options are available that include additional expansions and upgraded components. Sail on over to the Ostia: Pirates Expansion campaign page before March 26, 2024, to check out all the options and make your pledge.

There are certainly some exciting projects out in crowdfunding land. Let’s take a look at a couple of games that we think you should check out.
Our first project this week is the Kickstarter for Elyse’s Guide to Magic from Draco Studios.
Elyse’s Guide to Magic is a 300 page Dungeons and Dragons 5E supplement in the Dragonbond setting. You will be able to explore a whole new spellcasting system in your game that features mechanics like spontaneous spellcrafting. Players will be able to create spells on the fly by creating them out of combos of primary and secondary effects. This kind of spell casting can potentially be accessed by any character using what are called Vaala points – the ability to access a new raw form of magic. Crafted spells can include environmental and stacking effects to make combos even more powerful. But beware! If the raw magic this system is used in too complicated a fashion it can backlash against its user with negative effects. There is also a new summoning system focusing on communing with magical spirits and a built in level of unpredictability that can work in your favor sometimes and against you at others.
Elyse’s guide introduces four new classes from the Dragonbond setting: the Vaala Witch, the Scion, the Summoner and the Arcanologist each of which has at least 3 subclasses to choose from. There are also new subclasses for traditional 5e classes like the Enthraller Clerics who beguile and hypnotize others and the Mindwalker Sorcerers that haunt the dreams of their foes.
Beyond all that there are 150 new spells, a magical bestiary, new potions, poisons and magical items, powerful arch-villains and introductory adventure and much more to discover in this jam-packed magical tome. There are of course a number of different pledge levels starting at $25 USD for a PDF copy of Elyse’s Guide to Magic. A printed copy of the core book is available for $60 USD or you can go for the Game Ready pledge which includes the core book, introductory one shot, character sheets and a dry erase spell tracker. For those looking to go all in there is the Core Box at $150 USD and the Deluxe Box at $250 USD which include additional physical and digital components like liquid core dice and spells cards. The campaign for Elyse’s Guide to Magic will end on November 30, 2023 so be sure to visit the Kickstarter page before then!
To go along with the role playing theme this week our second project is A Short Rest, a dice collection Kickstarter from Lindorm Dice.
A short rest is a collection of dice sets inspired by rest relaxation and nature. The collection will feature up to 11 different dice sets. Here are some of the current available sets
Star Gaze – Lilac with gold swirls
Ancient Glade – Grass green with gold
Gone Fishing – Deep blue with gold and white swirls
Fellowship – Bright yellow with gold and silver
Leather Bound – Mahogany with black and white swirls
The descriptions won’t do them full justice though so you should definitely head to the Kickstarter page to check out each beautiful set. There are even more sets still locked behind stretch goals so the collection may still expand as the campaign progresses.
In addition to the beautiful dice sets there are quite a few accessories and add-ones that are available. There is a 35mm raised metal coin featuring a fox on one side and a lovely cornflower design on the other. For those curling up with a book on their short rest there is a leather bookmark depicting a gold design of campfire in the forest. If taking notes is more your style you can add a traveler’s notebook bound in faux leather with a gold print of the fox and cornflower designs. There are two dice storage options, a brown faux leather case for a single dice set with a gold cornflower print, and a larger “Traveller’s Findings” that holds up to 5 sets of dice and features the campfire in a forest design in gold print. And once you are ready to pack up your things and continue your adventure you can load everything into a custom printed canvas backpack with the “A Short Rest” logo. All of the add-ons are ala carte and can be added to any pledge level.
The pledge levels are very open ended starting with 1, 2 or 3 dice set for $14, $25 and $37 USD respectively. The “A Short Rest” core set is available for $59 and comes with 5 sets of dice and collector’s case. On the upper end is the “Forager” pledge for $146 which includes 11 dice sets, a dice case, the traveler’s journal, a bookmark, a fox amulet, 3 coins and a cornflower dice box. You should really see these beautiful offerings in person so take A Short Rest now and head over to the Kickstarter page. The campaign will end on December 7, 2023 so you will need to finish your rest before then!
